Apple Watch Cycling Workouts Not Syncing to Strava? What to Check

A ride missing entirely, a ride without its map and a ride missing sensor data are different problems. Here is how to find the broken handoff.

First identify which app recorded the ride. Apple Workout, Strava’s Watch app and third-party recorders use different upload paths. Seeing a workout in Apple Health does not prove that Strava can import it. Preserve the original recording while you work out which handoff failed.

Find the original recording

Open the app in which you pressed Start, then find the completed ride. Check its date, start time, duration and recording source. A notification about an active workout is not the same as a saved activity. If the original app has no completed ride, reconnect the Watch and inspect its unsynced or unfinished recordings first.

Next, check the Strava account on your phone. When multiple accounts or a recently replaced phone are involved, confirm that you are looking at the account connected to the recorder. Keep these checks separate from changes to sharing permissions.

Choose the correct upload path

Recording sourceWhere to investigate
Apple’s native Workout appThe Health connection and import list inside Strava.
Strava on Apple WatchThe Strava Watch app’s unsynced activities and phone connection.
Bicino or another third-party appThat recorder’s direct export or upload feature. Health storage alone is insufficient.

If you recorded in Apple Workout

Strava’s documented Health import accepts native Apple Workout activities from the past 30 days. In Strava, open Settings, then Manage Apps and Devices, then Health. Check the connection, the permissions for workouts and routes, and the import list. Try importing the specific activity before changing the whole setup.

Enable Automatic Uploads if you want future eligible recordings to transfer without manual imports. After a permissions change, use a new short test ride to check the ongoing workflow; an old activity alone may not reveal whether the new settings work.

If you recorded in Strava on the Watch

Check Settings, then Unsynced, in the Strava Watch app and attempt its manual sync. Give the devices a stable connection. Inspect the account’s activity history after the upload attempt before starting another recording or trying another route into Strava.

A ride recorded on the Watch need not appear as a simultaneous recording session on the phone. Judge completion by the saved activity, not whether both screens showed the same timer.

If you recorded in Bicino or another app

Strava says activities written to Health by another company’s app do not import through its native Apple Workout connection. Find the recorder’s own upload or supported file-export workflow. Importing a planned route from Strava into Bicino is a separate operation from uploading a completed ride back to Strava.

Check the status shown by your installed app and verify a short completed activity in your Strava account. If an app offers file export, confirm which format and measurements it includes before depending on that path for an event. Do not create a second recording merely to solve an export problem.

The activity arrived, but the map or metrics did not

Compare the original activity with the Strava copy. If the original has no GPS track, investigate its recording permissions and conditions. If the original has a route but the copy does not, investigate the transfer’s supported fields and route permissions. Missing power or cadence deserves the same comparison.

A useful support report includes the recording app and version, Watch and phone models, activity start time, the transfer method, and exactly which fields differ. “Sync is broken” combines several possible failures; “the original has a map but this upload does not” identifies the next check.

Avoid making duplicates while fixing the problem

Choose one recorder and one intended upload path for each ride. Before retrying an import, look for an existing activity at the same time. Keep a recoverable original or export before deleting anything. Two recordings of the same outing may contain different data, so inspect them before deciding which to keep.

Finish with a short rehearsal: start the intended recorder, save the workout, reconnect if necessary and check the resulting activity in Strava. Once that works, repeat the same sequence on the next normal ride.
