Apple Maps cycling directions are available only in supported regions. If cycling is missing or a route cannot be calculated, check Apple’s current feature-availability list and test a simple local journey. Map coverage, cycling routing and offline-map availability are separate capabilities.
Check the current coverage list first
Apple maintains an iOS and iPadOS feature-availability page with a Maps: Cycling section. Use that current list rather than an old announcement or a country list copied into a blog. Coverage can expand, and a feature name may describe a narrower area than ordinary map access.
Check the area in which you will ride, including border crossings or the far end of a longer journey. If the cycling feature is unavailable there, reinstalling an app or repeatedly changing permissions is unlikely to create it.
Test whether the issue belongs to the region or the route
- Open Apple Maps on the iPhone and choose two nearby points on ordinary roads.
- Select directions and the cycling travel mode where offered. Check whether any local cycling route appears.
- Compare that result with the journey that failed. Try a known accessible starting point instead of an ambiguous pin inside a large site.
- Check the connection and retry while online. A saved map area does not necessarily prove the requested routing operation is available.
- If the area is supported but an ordinary route still fails, check for software updates and report the map problem with the precise start and destination.
Read the route before pressing Go
When cycling routing is available, Apple provides route information and options such as avoiding hills or busy roads. Review the chosen option rather than treating the first result as a guarantee that every segment matches your bike, confidence or local access rules.
Inspect unusual connections, ferry crossings and the final approach to the destination. A route can be computationally valid while still requiring local judgment about conditions. If a suggested connection looks doubtful, plan a known alternative before departure.
Why driving directions are a poor substitute
Changing the travel mode changes the assumptions behind the route. A fast road suitable for a car is not automatically a useful cycling connection. Walking guidance can also include paths, steps or access conditions that do not suit a bike.
Use a cycling-capable alternative and inspect the route. Do not simply select whichever mode produces a line on the map. A few minutes spent reviewing the journey can prevent a much larger detour later.
Choose an alternative by the job you need
For a familiar commuter journey, you may only need to plan and inspect the route once. For touring, you may need stored maps, an entire route and a clear way to recover after leaving it. For a social ride, sharing the same route file or service as the organizer may matter most.
Compare cycling-focused services such as Komoot or Ride with GPS, or use an appropriate standalone bike computer. Verify local map quality, offline preparation, Watch support and any payment requirements in the current service. The best replacement is the one that supports your actual journey.
| Need | Check in the alternative |
|---|---|
| A planned road ride | Cycling route type, road choices and a usable route preview. |
| A route on Apple Watch | Actual Watch navigation support, not just workout recording. |
| An area with unreliable reception | Maps and route stored on the device used for guidance. |
| An organized ride | Compatibility with the route the organizer supplied. |
What this means for Bicino
Bicino’s Apple Maps route planning depends on Apple’s cycling coverage. Moving the guidance onto bicino one does not expand Apple’s routing regions. If Apple cannot create the journey, first choose a route source that can.
The Bicino website currently lists Strava route import as available and Komoot import as planned. These are different workflows from creating a new Apple Maps route. Confirm which imports your installed version offers, and prepare a short local example before relying on that method for a trip.
If the problem is the screen rather than route availability, our Apple Maps bike-computer guide explains how a connected display fits into the setup.
